Wainwright, Alaska, United States of America

Wainwright is a small Arctic coastal community, located on the north-western coast of Alaska. More than 90% of its population is native. With minimal year-round employment opportunities, subsistence plays a substantial role in the local economy. Climate change is manifested in receding arctic sea ice and impacts the activities of the community. Plans to develop offshore oil resources in the Chukchi Sea will have large impacts on the community’s economy and socio-cultural circumstances. It is the soon to come petroleum development that combined with climate change creates two distinct yet connected needs for adaptation that led us to select Wainwright.
